The Artist's Vision
Khosravi's artistic journey is a testament to her unique perspective. Born in Iran, she migrated to the United States in 2015, bringing with her a rich cultural heritage and a deep-rooted desire to challenge oppressive attitudes towards women. "I like contradiction, contrasting elements, duality. There's barbed wire, but the colors are peaceful. A figure seems calm, but her hands are bound. I hope violence isn't the first thing you see," she reveals.
A New Body of Work
This month, Khosravi unveils a fresh collection inspired by the form of the altarpiece. These intimate pieces, featuring compartments and curtains, offer a glimpse into her exploration of personal and psychological spaces. Created before the recent U.S.-Iran tensions escalated into warfare, her work reflects on the emotional residue of her upbringing in Iran.
"I've been thinking more and more about personal, psychological space and the emotional residue of being born and raised under those circumstances in Iran," she explains.
The Power of Symbolism
One of the standout pieces, "Behind a Curtain," features a bullet passing through a mirror, its golden tail echoing light from a shirt pocket. This symbol of disruption and instability is a powerful reminder of Khosravi's childhood during the Iran-Iraq War. The shadow of conflict, she believes, leaves an indelible mark on one's psyche.
"That shadow leaves an emotional and psychological imprint," she reflects.
Drawing from History
Khosravi's source materials delve into the rich history of Persian miniature paintings and medieval illustrations. She draws inspiration from the absence or secondary roles of women in these artworks, aiming to shift these dynamics. The recreation of Christ's side wound as a distinctly vaginal image in "Home" is a bold statement, challenging traditional iconography.
"I like the juxtaposition of objects or scenes that come from different contexts. They create dialogue," she adds.
A Story of Resilience
Khosravi's own story is one of resilience and cross-cultural influence. Her move to the United States and subsequent artistic journey have shaped her ideas and visual lexicon. The "Woman, Life, Freedom" movement in Iran, sparked by the murder of Mahsa Amini, has galvanized her art, leading to powerful exhibitions like "True to Self."
"More and more, I see women refusing to accept imposed limitations. Women are trying to push back," she observes.
Holding onto Hope
In "The Drop," Khosravi presents a powerful message of hope amidst harsh circumstances. The central panel, resembling a guillotine in front of a pomegranate tree, symbolizes life, fertility, and the resilience of the human spirit.
"If you are living under very harsh circumstances, in Iran or other countries, life goes on, and there are beautiful moments. The way to survive is to hold onto that hope," she says.
