The store's signature candied chestnut dessert, Mont Blanc, sells out daily, and the staff's attention to detail is impressive. The "sold out" sign is a professionally made, not a hastily handwritten notice, indicating the high demand.
On a recent Sunday afternoon, we finally got our hands on a Mont Blanc. We arrived just as we expected, only to find all the morning stock gone. But fear not, as a second batch is available at 5 p.m. However, we had to wait in line, as the shop limits each customer to two boxes, and only 30 boxes are made per batch.
The Mont Blanc itself is a masterpiece. It's frozen and requires a six-hour thawing period for the optimal texture. Starting at the top, the fork passes through creamy candied chestnut paste, whipped cream, and a crunchy merengue base, with a chestnut in the middle. The dessert is not overly sugary or oily, and the rum adds a mature, elegant touch.
Despite the wait, the 30 minutes spent in line was worth it. However, we acknowledge that not everyone has the time or patience for such a delay. The shop's single location inside Tokyo Station Daimaru means there's no way to reduce waiting time by visiting a more remote branch.
For those who can't wait in line, there's a solution. Online Mont Blanc pre-orders start on the 20th of every month for the following month. While this means a longer wait, at least it's a more comfortable one.
